If you've been reading my articles for a bit, you'll know by now how much I love river cruising. Today I thought I'd share my top 6 reasons.

It seems obvious but river cruise ships are generally much smaller than ocean-going vessels. One of the huge benefits of this is that they carry fewer passengers, which creates a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. This makes it so much easier to connect with your fellow passengers and oftentimes you'll form lasting friendships with other like-minded travelers.
More Destinations
You'll have access to more destinations. Small ships have the ability to navigate narrower and shorter waterways. This lets you visit smaller ports and off-the-beaten-path destinations that larger ships just cannot reach.
Scenic Views
There is so much to be said about this. River cruises offer views that are stunning and you'll see scenery that you'd never have the opportunity to see any other way. Not only will the ships dock right at the riverbank, but while sailing you're always close enough to see the sites along the shore.
Personalized Service
With fewer passengers, the crew will always be able to provide more personalized service. You'll possibly find yourself making lasting friendships with them also. They'll know your name, know your preferences, and have your morning coffee ready the moment you sit down at your table. Prefer tea or mimosas for breakfast? They'll know that too.
Flexible Itineraries
Something that isn't mentioned as much, but is very important, is that river cruise ships can be more flexible with their itineraries. Impromptu stops or changes to the schedule can happen with any type of cruising, but with a river cruise, the crew will adapt quickly. Unforeseen things can happen and they're pros at adapting and making sure you still have a wonderful experience.
Inclusive Experiences
Speaking of experiences, small river cruise ships are very inclusive when it comes to shore excursions, onboard lectures, evening entertainment, etc. Many excursions also include food and/or beverages such as wine tasting or local culinary experiences.
